History

Ice House Hill Farm has been a farm since at least 1858 when Truman Andrews purchased the property. It has changed hands over time, next being purchased in 1908 by the wife of  Brooklyn brewer, William A.A. Brown and, later, by a farmer named McDonald. The large barn was built in 1922 by McDonald’s wife, before the land switched hands once again. Most recently Ice House Hill was a prolific dairy farm, owned and operated by Martin Malnati and his family. 80 head of cattle were milked here daily and the milk was sold to  Borden dairy in CT.

In 2001 Ice House Hill Farm Nominee Land Trust purchased the farm to preserve the stunning vista. The iconic Ice House is used in modern times as a tool shed and is the star feature of one of the most beloved landscapes in the region. Today the farm houses a happy herd of Hereford cattle and is kept in pristine condition through the efforts of the land trust.
